MFAA WW1 Commemoration Banner Unveiled


The unveiling of the new WW1 commemorative poster in the Cradley Heritage Board outside Cradley Library in Colley Lane, Cradley took place at 9:00am on Saturday.

The new poster has been prepared by local artist Warren McCabe-Smith on behalf of Midland Film And Art, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund. It depicts men with Cradley connection who all enlisted during the Great War 1914 – 1918. Some were killed in action, some died from disease and others returned having gone through terrible experiences, but picked up the threads of their lives.

There are a few stories about these men, their families and life after the war, including Cradley’s war memorials and the victory parade, that have been taken from the research carried out by local historian, Terry Evans which appears in his new book (“Some of Cradley’s Finest”).

Midland Film And Art group are organising the Cradley Memorials Heritage Trail project that runs until June 2015. The project is putting on WW1 and WW2 displays and presentations, restoring war photographs and memorabilia, capturing memories on camera and encouraging people to get in contact to share what they have or know about Cradley during WW2

Another aspect of the project is working with the Friends of Homer Hill Park to deliver Trail Leader training to local volunteers so that they can guide groups of people interested in visiting the many memorials contained on some 16 heritage memorial sites dotted around the Cradley area. A few of these are; St Peter’s churchyard, Overend Methodist Missions, Bernard Oakley Memorials Gardens, Netherend Unitarian Chapel and the Steve Bloomer memorial (England football superstar interned in Germany during WW1), etc…./

At the end of the project 2 new interchangeable history posters will be prepared for the Cradley heritage board with the support of Friends of Cradley Library and the Cradley Then and Now groups.

Terry Evans is now working on a book about Cradley in WW2 and needs people to get in touch with their stories and memorabilia.

Midland Film and Art is a membership club where people can enjoy screenings of films or view artwork and crafts that would otherwise not be shown in mainstream cinemas or exhibitions, or be available locally. These shows usually have an educational aim, introducing new audiences to different audiovisual works through screening and display, encouraging participation in arts and crafts. A common feature that may characterize a Midland Film and Art meeting is that they either begin with an introduction to the audience and/or end with the promotion of a discussion about the film/art, where assistants, organizers and sometimes the filmmakers/artists themselves, exchange their views.
